Biometric Operator Identification

A system that lets cashiers sign on to the terminal and supervisors approve operations with their fingerprint, on a reader at the checkout, instead of typing passwords or codes.

What problem it solves

A password or a supervisor code can be forgotten, lent or seen while it is typed. When that happens, it is hard to establish who actually approved an operation at the checkout. With this system, the cashier and the supervisor identify themselves with a fingerprint at the terminal.

What it does

Cashier sign-on
The cashier enters their user and places a finger on the reader. The system compares the fingerprint with those enrolled for that user and completes the sign-on, with no password to type.
Supervisor approval
When an operation needs a supervisor, they place a finger on the reader, with no code to type. The system identifies the person and checks that they have the required level.
The POS system's users
Users and their levels come from the store's POS system, so there is no second user list to maintain.
Guided enrollment
Staff choose the hand and the finger, and the screen guides the operator through each press until enrollment is complete.
One fingerprint, one person
Enrollment rejects a fingerprint that already belongs to another user.
Controlled administration
Managing users and fingerprints requires administrator credentials, and allows viewing, enrolling and deleting each operator's fingerprints.
Guidance on screen
If a reading fails, the screen gives the reason, such as a badly placed finger, a low-quality reading or a dirty reader.
Reader status
The administration application shows the reader's details and status, and can restart it.

How it fits

It integrates with the store's POS system: the sales application asks for the fingerprint in its sign-on and approval flows, and continues with the result. When a fingerprint is requested and which levels can approve are defined with each chain.
